First Drive: 2011 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty

General Motors Redesigns its Heavy Duty Lineup and Launches a Few Salvos at the Super Duty and Ram HD Along the Way

June 13, 2010 By Mark Williams motortrend.com

There's not a lot of complexity to the heavy-duty segment: Big is good; bigger is better; and strongest is best. The heavy-duty segment, made up of three-quarter and one-ton trucks (especially those with big-torque, work-loving turbodiesel under the hood), is just at the beginning of a volume comeback and smack in the middle of a serious market share war. To further heighten the competition, all the trucks in the segment are either all-new or significantly revised in the last two years. The Ram HD made its dramatic debut last year and won our 2010 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. And this year, both Ford and GM are bringing their best and brightest (and strongest) to the party.

First Test: 2011 Toyota Avalon

Minor Improvements for Toyota's Full-Size Comfort Cruiser

June 08, 2010 By Rory Jurnecka  motortrend.com

The Toyota Avalon is not an enthusiast's car. It never has been, it never will be. The Avalon is not typically purchased by people who hung posters of Lamborghinis on their wall as children, nor is it cross-shopped with European sport sedans. And that's fine. Because the Avalon's raison d'etre is quite simple, actually: Provide a full-size sedan packed withluxury features for a price the average workingman can afford. And the Avalon does that job even more admirably for 2011 with a recent redesign.

The Blue Oval Moves Upmarket

Does this make sense? Yet another Ford stickers in Lincoln territory

June 07, 2010 By Todd Lassa  motortrend.com

It's easy to spend Lincoln money on a Ford these days. And we're not just talking about the Shelby GT500. The Taurus SHO, with Ford's premium 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, starts at $38,545 and quickly reaches Lincoln MKS territory, though the EcoBoost MKS base price is some 10-large higher than the SHO. The top of seven trim levels for the F-150 is the Platinum edition, designed to take the place of the failed Lincoln Mk LT pickup. The F-150 Platinum was originally designed to be a new Lincoln pickup, until Ford decided not to make an extra truck grille.

Now comes the 2011 Ford Flex Titanium, a special package on top of the erstwhile high-end Limited trim level. It revives the early '00's word "bling." The Titanium features a tuxedo black two-tone roof, blackout trim around the headlamps and taillamps and a black chrome finish grille with special badging on the leading edge of the hood, first seen at the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association show in Vegas, baby.

First Drive: 2011 Nissan Juke

Wild Thing: Nissan Crosses Over to the Wild Side

June 05, 2010 By Ron Kiino  motortrend.com

Part SUV, part sporty coupe, the 2011 Juke brings Nissan into the exploding small-crossover arena, the fourth largest segment in the U.S. and one that continues to grow at an alarming rate. Other automakers are setting their sights on this segment, too. When the Juke goes on sale this fall, it will face off with such fresh faces as Mini Countryman and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, as well as a group of established players that includes Scion xB, Kia Soul, and Suzuki SX4. We recently had the opportunity to drive a pre-production all-wheel-drive Juke around the mountains near Malibu, and found its dynamics to be about as entertaining as its styling is shocking.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

Welcome to the EV2

From the November, 2009 issue of Motor Trend By Kim Reynolds, Photography by The Manufacturer, Nate Martinez, Brian Vance

Unlike some of the other extended range (plugs-in) hybrids being developed, the Volt is entirely driven by its 149-horsepower electric motor. The gas engine itself contributes power exclusively through its generator's output (which is 71 horses after power conversion losses, the 1.4-liter engine's actual power hasn't been released). And this has led many people to make some incorrect assumptions about how powerful the Volt will be once its battery reaches that minimum 30 percent level. What happens is -- well, nothing much happens at all. No, the Volt isn't suddenly diminished to a wimpy 71 horsepower automobile, because the engine-generator (which operates between 1000 and 4000 rpm, and is always under load) is continuously replenishing the battery. In other words, unless you're endlessly climbing Everest, there are plenty of opportunities for the generator to keep that approximately 30-percent state-of-charge maintained. So let's dispense with that erroneous assumption.

2011 Kia Sorento

(Spelled "Sorrento" in the newsletter crossword)

From the December, 2009 issue of Motor Trend

The first vehicle to be built at Kia's new factory in West Point, Georgia, the new Sorento will be a unibody crossover designed to have wider market appeal than the current body-on-frame model. MT technical director Frank Markus got to test the 2011 Sorento in early November, prior to its upcoming launch at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. Here's part of what he had to say:

Even the base Sorento LX brings a generous feature set that includes air conditioning, a full array of power assists, auxiliary steering wheel controls, trip computer, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio with AUX/USB inputs and Bluetooth. Stepping up to EX upgrades the interior trappings with more elegant upholstery/trim combos, dual-zone auto climate control with ionized-air purification, push-button start and rear backup sonar, while the EX V-6 also adds the third-row seat and a rear A/C unit. Taking the EX route also brings more upscale option choices like leather upholstery, a touch-screen navigation system with real-time traffic link, panoramic sunroof and a premium Infinity sound system. The EX V-6 even offers a rear-seat DVD player. However, when it comes to safety, all Sorentos are created equal, and boast ABS discs, stability control, Electronic Brake Assist/Distribution, Hills Start Assist/Downhill Brake Control, and front/front-side/side-curtain airbags.
